UK‑First Newly Qualified International Drone Pilots Enable Advanced Grid Technology for NIE Networks in Northern Ireland and across the UK in March 2026
#NIENetworks has announced a groundbreaking capability for the UK energy sector, made possible through a new collaboration between #HeimdallPower and the #DronePilotTrainingAcademy in #Belfast, #NorthernIreland. This milestone marks a major step forward in the modernisation and digitalisation of the UK electricity grid — and it begins with two newly qualified drone pilots.
#InternationalDronePilots Achieve UK GVC Certification with Drone Pilot Training Academy
Two professional drone pilots from #Norway, Thor and Stian, recently travelled to Northern Ireland to complete their UK CAA General Visual Line of Sight Certificate (GVC) under the instruction of Robert Dobbin, Lead 3iC Drone Pilot Instructor and certified Flight Assessor at the Drone Pilot Training Academy.
Their successful qualification is a crucial requirement for operating drones commercially in Northern Ireland & across the UK, particularly when working near critical national infrastructure. This training now enables the deployment of #DynamicLineRating (DLR) sensors on live power lines across Northern Ireland — a capability never before carried out in the UK.
Once their #CAAOperationalAuthorisation is issued, Thor and Stian will become among the first pilots in Northern Ireland & across the United Kingdom to perform drone‑based installation of DLR sensors on energised transmission assets.
This represents a major advancement in how the UK energy sector approaches inspection, monitoring, and grid intelligence.
Transforming the UK Grid with Dynamic Line Rating Technology
NIE Networks, in partnership with #HeimdallPower and #SONI, is rolling out DLR technology to improve real‑time visibility of the electricity network. These AI‑enabled sensors continuously measure:
- Conductor temperature
- Wind cooling effects
- Real‑time line capacity
- Environmental and operational conditions
This data allows system operators to safely maximise the use of existing infrastructure — a vital step in supporting renewable energy growth and reducing the need for costly network upgrades.
Key benefits of drone‑installed DLR sensors include:
- Installation without planned outages, minimising disruption for customers
- Enhanced safety, using remote drone operations instead of manual work at height
- Improved situational awareness for grid operators
- Optimised asset utilisation, supporting the transition to a low‑carbon energy system
This initiative forms part of NIE Networks’ wider strategy to build a smarter, more flexible, and more resilient electricity network for Northern Ireland.
High‑Standard Drone Training Delivered in Northern Ireland
The pilots completed their theoretical training at the Ivanhoe Hotel, Carryduff, followed by a comprehensive Practical Flight Assessment at the Drone Pilot Training Academy’s dedicated training site on Cadger Road.
Their success reflects the Academy’s commitment to:
- CAA‑aligned training standards
- Operational safety
- Real‑world commercial readiness
- Specialist instruction for pilots working around critical infrastructure
Thor shared his experience:
“#RobertDobbin was a delight to work with — experienced and thorough, yet still flexible. I would give 6 stars if it was possible.”
Driving Innovation Across the UK Energy Landscape
This achievement represents a UK‑first capability, demonstrating how advanced drone operations, expert training, and cutting‑edge sensor technology can work together to transform the energy sector.
By enabling drone‑based installation of DLR sensors on live lines, NIE Networks and its partners are:
- Accelerating grid modernisation
- Supporting renewable integration
- Improving operational efficiency
- Delivering long‑term value for customers
- Showcasing Northern Ireland as a leader in innovative drone applications
