Robert Dobbin's Personal Connection to the Red Gate

For me, the red gate is more than a symbol.

Having grown up on this family farm in Northern Ireland, I have spent my childhood walking through gates, walking the fields, playing with my Brothers and friends, and experiencing the opportunities and challenges fun and friendship of rural life first hand.

The Story Behind the Red Gate

The Red Gate Story

For me, the red gate is more than a symbol. Growing up on my family farm in Northern Ireland, it was part of everyday life — walking the fields, working the land, and sharing the fun, challenges and opportunities of rural life with family and friends.

For generations, red gates have been a familiar sight across the countryside. Originally painted red so they could be clearly seen through mist, rain and fog, they became the gateway into the fields where livestock were cared for, crops were grown, and livelihoods were built.

Over time, the red gate came to mean more than an entrance. A closed gate kept people out. An open gate welcomed people in. It became a symbol of opportunity, growth and possibility.

As a fifth-generation member of my family connected to this land, I still remember my father standing at the red gate, looking over the fields ahead.

Step Into a Field of Dreams.
Plant the Seed Today. Harvest the Opportunity Tomorrow.

A journey of a young farmer in Northern Ireland - A Smart Farming NI Story 2026

A young farmer contact me at Drone Pilot Training Academy, I invited him to come through the red gate, he looked out across the fields and wondered what the future of farming might look like.

He has grown up around farming, understands the land, the livestock and the daily challenges that come with it. But now he is curious about technology and how drones could become part of that future.

At first, it starts with simple questions:

How can drones help check livestock?
Can they monitor crops?
Can they spot drainage problems or water leaks?
Can they inspect boundaries and hedge rows faster than walking the fields?

What he discovers is that drones are not just about flying — they are about collecting data, finding problems early and helping farmers make better decisions.

He starts with Beginner Drone Training to learn the basics — safe flying, controls, planning and regulations.

As his confidence grows, he moves on to the A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC), allowing him to build practical experience and carry out smaller data collection tasks such as field inspections, livestock checks and boundary surveys to other farmers for a fee.

But his ambition is bigger.  He wants to progress into larger drone operations, more advanced technology and commercial agricultural work.

So he takes the next step and completes his GVC (General Visual Line of Sight Certificate) — the recognised route into professional drone operations and larger aircraft under Operational Authorisation.

With experience, qualifications and confidence behind him, he can now explore bigger opportunities:

🌾 Crop Monitoring & Crop spraying
πŸ“‘ Precision Agriculture, Data Collection
🚜 Land Surveying & Mapping
πŸ„ Livestock Monitoring
πŸ’§ Water Leak Detection
πŸ“ Boundary & Drainage Inspections
🌍 Environmental Monitoring

This is what Smart Farming NI is about.

Benefits of Agricultural Drone Technology & Future Outlook

Agricultural drone technology is helping farmers, landowners and rural businesses work smarter by improving how land is monitored, inspected and managed across Northern Ireland.

By using aerial data collection, thermal imaging and 3D mapping, drone technology can provide a faster and more efficient way to gather valuable information across farmland.

Key benefits include:

βœ… Saving time on field inspections
βœ… Reducing fuel and labour costs
βœ… Monitoring large areas quickly
βœ… Improving visibility across land and livestock
βœ… Identifying drainage and water issues earlier
βœ… Supporting better planning and land management
βœ… Creating accurate aerial records and mapping
βœ… Improving safety in difficult or remote areas
βœ… Supporting environmental and conservation work
βœ… Providing a clearer picture of changing land conditions

As farming continues to evolve, the future is becoming increasingly connected to technology, data and smarter decision-making.

Agricultural drone technology is expected to play an increasingly important role in:

🌾 Crop and grassland monitoring
🌑️ Thermal analysis and land observation
πŸ—ΊοΈ Advanced 3D mapping and land modelling
πŸ“‘ Aerial data collection and field intelligence
🚜 Emerging precision farming technologies
πŸ’§ Drainage monitoring and water management
πŸ„ Livestock monitoring and land inspections
🌍 Environmental awareness and land sustainability

Across Northern Ireland and beyond, drone technology is helping bridge the gap between traditional farming and emerging smart farming solutions.

Smart Farming NI is focused on supporting that transition by bringing practical agricultural drone intelligence, aerial observation and evolving farm technology into everyday land management.
